Abstract
1,155,504. Packaging in inert atmosoheres. W. C. LEASURE and J. W. CRAWFORD. 7 Feb., 1967, No. 5856/67. Heading B8C. A granular product is packaged in an oxygen-free atmosphere by feeding it to an opening 10 in a chamber, supplying an inert gas under pressure to the chamber to force the gas through the opening 10 to de-oxygenate the incoming product, conveying the product through the chamber by vibration to free the product of oxygen-bearing pockets dispersed throughout its volume, and delivering it to a package through a closeable opening 4, 27, and sealing the package. As described, the package is of the tubular kind made on a known former and sealed above and below the product by a known pair of jaws (U.S. Specifications 2,899,875 and 1,986,422), the funnel 4 leading into the package mouth. A tray 8 forming part of the chamber is vibrated by means 6, and the product travels along a platform 15 which may have holes to allow the gas to pass up through the product. Gas is supplied by tubes 18, 19 both above and below platform 15, and may also be supplied to the funnel 4 and package (2), by tubes (20), (21), Fig. 1 (not shown). The product blocks the opening 10 to prevent entry of oxygen, and it is stated that a further product " scrubbing " operation occurs when it cascades down through header 16 through the inert gas.
