851,470. Packaging-machines. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G., F. Jan. 26, 1959 [Feb. 13, 1958], No. 2756/59. Class 94(1). Apparatus for evacuating and treating with inert gas filled packages comprises an endless conveyer 7 between straight runs of which is arranged a vacuum chamber, packages being transferred from one straight run into the chamber 12 while completed packages are transferred from the chamber to the other run. Packages B pass beneath conventional filling agitating and mouth folding devices 2, R, 3 and are aligned with arms 21 of a plunger 20. The plunger transfers the packages on to a platform 13 which rises to carry them into the chamber and seal the chamber base. Vacuum is first produced and then inert gas blown in through nozzles 15 directed towards the package mouths. Jaws 17 seal the packages. Filler elements 18, 26 reduce the chamber volume and act as guides for the packages. The platform descends with the packages which are engaged by suction cups 25 at the same time as a new batch of unsealed packages is transferred to the platform, and drawn on to the conveyer. The packages pass under a known top seal folding device 5 to the discharge position. The device may operate on lined or bag enclosed cartons in which case, carton flap spreaders of known kind (not shown) are arranged in the chamber 12. A number of chambers for one package each may replace the chamber shown.
