Abstract

1,155,097. Cartridge-actuated tools. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 28 Sept., 1966. No. 43403/66. Heading B4C. A cartridge-actuated tool for driving nails 118 into a workpiece 130 comprises a piston 60 movable in a barrel 44 from a first position to a second driven position and a resilient buffer 104 adapted to be compressed upon overtravel of the piston beyond the second position. The barrel is slidably mounted in 2 and is connected at its forward end to a buffer housing 72, which together with the end of the barrel, clamps a flange 96 of a fastener guide 94 against the resilient buffer; the buffer is made from a polyurethane elastomeric material. A sleeve 106 is secured to the housing 72 and by rotating the sleeve the barrel may be withdrawn for loading. In the event of overtravel of the piston, a shoulder 66 formed on the latter abuts a correspondingly shaped shoulder 102 in the guide thereby compressing the buffer.
