Abstract
1,154,137. Treating algae. KRAUSSMAFFEI A.G. C. P. STEINMETZ and G. VOYE. 27 Feb., 1968, No. 9419/68. Heading C3U. Marine algae, e.g. gracilaria, to facilitate the extraction therefrom of jellylike products, e.g. agar, are subjected at a low temperature, e.g. below 25‹ C., to one or more two-stage alternating treatments in alkaline media followed by acid media, or vice-versa. The alkali treatment is preferably above pH 7À5 using salts, oxides or hydroxides of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals or ammonium, suitably using NaOH or KOH in the first step and a weaker base in subsequent steps. The acid treatment is suitably below pH 6À0 using a mineral and/or carboxylic acids or an acid salt thereof. A bleaching step, e.g. with H 2 O 2 , may also be included. In examples, gracilaria. is treated in succession with; (1) soda lye, lactic acid, Ca(OH 2 ) 2 /NaOH/ Mg(OH) 2 mixture and lactic acid, and (2) H 2 SO 4 , NaOH/KOH, NaH 2 PO 4 and three further H 2 SO 4 : NaOH/KOH treatments, the final alkali bath also containing H 2 O 2 . In each case the treated product is extracted with hot water to yield agar.
