Abstract

1,151,361. Continuous casting-machines. UNITED STEEL COMPANIES Ltd. 16 Aug., 1966 [19 Aug., 1965], No. 35664/65. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting machine in which a curved water-cooled mould is reciprocated through a curved path, the mould and waterjacket only are reciprocated within a stationary housing and water is supplied to the waterjacket via sliding members and hollow pivots. The fixed housing 3, has manifolds 9, 10 formed to enclose sliding pistons 13 that contain ports leading to hollow pivots 17. The pistons slide in straight lines that are tangential to the radius of curvature of the mould 1 at the pivots 17 and the mould is reciprocated through linkage 5, 6, 8. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3-5, not shown) for moulds for wide rectangular slabs requiring water inlets to the waterjacket on all four sides the mould and waterjacket are supported on hollow pivots which are themselves supported on hollow cylinders that are movable in sockets in the housing. Water is fed from an inlet manifold into a ring pipe to feed the water-jacket.
