A refractory material, e.g. alumina, is coated with platinum or a platinum group metal or an alloy thereof either by vapour depositing PtO 2 or other reducible compound and subsequently heating the coating to reduce it to Pt or by introducing the substrate at a temperature of 400 to 500‹C. into the PtO 2 vapour to reduce the vapour and deposit Pt on the substrate. A further coating of Pt may be electro-deposited on the coating.
