Abstract
1,149,822. Rolling tubes. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS A.B. 27 Jan., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966; 10 Feb., 1966], No. 4189/67. Heading B3M. Tubes of zirconium or zirconium base alloys (including additives of one or more of Sn, Fe, Ni, Cr and Cb) are made by cold rolling blanks between a pair of grooved pilger rolls, the blanks being reduced in one step by at least 50% while being supported on a mandrel. The rolls may be continuously rotated, or oscillated back and forth. A stand for the rolls is normally stationary, but may, if desired, be reciprocable relative to a stationary tube. A finished tube may be given a final cold working in a drawing die or planetary ball swaging mill, with a reduction of say 4-6% to produce a good surface finish. As shown, a pair of rolls 11, 12 are rotated continuously, and two blanks 18, 18a are reciprocated in synchronism with the rolls. The blanks are carried by a mandrel 17 sup. ported a chuck 62, the chuck being reciprocated in response to the movement of a follower 59 in the cam track 54 of a rotating drum 53. Additionally, a carriage 50 which supports the drum, is indexed by a screw 52 in order to progressively feed the blanks between the rolls. The drives for the drum 53 and screw 52 are synchronized with the rotation of the rolls. The chuck is able to move relatively to a chuck holder 63, by virtue of a spring loaded connection, should the force exerted by the rolls on the tubes exceed a given value. The blanks are rotatably indexed between working strokes by means of a shaft 61, the indexing step being slightly smaller or greater than 60, 45 or 90 degrees.
