Abstract

1330346 Flanging and necking cans AMERICAN CAN CO 26 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50745/70 Headings B3E and B3Q A method of necking-in and flanging a can body includes the steps of necking a portion of the can spaced axially from one end thereof whilst simultaneously therewith flanging outwardly that portion of the can disposed between the necked-in portion and the end of the can. The can body is initially partially flanged by moving dies 30, Fig. 1, to impart an outward flare to the can (Fig. 2, not shown). Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a pair of heads each having a rotatable pilot roll 32, Fig. 10, which engages and rotates the can B, an internal anvil roll 60, an external spring- loaded forming roll 80 and means for effecting relative radial and axial movement between the pilot roll and the forming roll. The pilot and anvil rolls are carried on a stepped shaft 42 the pilot being mounted on a slidable sleeve 38 reciprocated by a cam roller 50 and rotated by gearing 66, 68. The shaft 42 is supported in spring mounted bearings 57 (Fig. 8, not shown). Each sleeve is also engaged by a pressure roller 78. The can is fed between the opposed heads by hand or by means of a magnetic or gripper cradle 96. In a modification shown in Fig. 15 the anvil roll 60<SP>1</SP> is mounted concentric with the pilot roll 32<SP>1</SP> to facilitate insertion in the can but is mounted on an eccentric portion 112 of a shaft 114 eccentrically mounted within the hollow shaft 42<SP>1</SP>. In operation the shaft 114 is partially rotated by an arm 120 and a cam roller 122 to impart eccentricity to the anvil roller during the forming operation. In another modification, Figs. 18 and 20, a collapsible spinning anvil 160 is used and rotates with the sleeve 3811. The anvil comprises three large segments 168 and three small segments 170 mounted on slides 172 and are held radially inwardly by a circular spring 184. In operation the segments are expanded by a wedge 190 concentrically mounted within the hollow shaft 4211.
