Abstract

[Also in Division G2] In a sheet-separating mechanism operating as described in Specification 1,148,087, the original and copy sheets O, S, after leaving the printing cylinder 1, initially pass between a pair of rollers 8, 9 mounted on respective shafts 20, 21. Roller 8 rotates at the same speed as cylinder 1, but roller 9 rotates at a faster rate, so that the frictional force of roller 9 on copy sheet S causes it to separate from the original O Thus the leading edge of sheet S is then slightly in advance of the leading edge of sheet O, so facilitating entry to the sheet-separating mechanism proper. When sheet S becomes taut between roller 9 and the printing cylinder (position of Fig. 2), a slippage mechanism comes into operation, causing roller 9 to rotate at the same speed as roller 8. This is shown in more detail in Fig. 4. Shafts 20, 21 carry a plurality of rollers 8, 9, staggered as shown. Shaft 20 is driven by a gear-wheel 28 fixed to it. A gearwheel 22 is loosely mounted on shaft 20, and can be frictionally engaged with it by a friction ring 24b. Such engagement is made by forcing gear 22 against ring 24b and gear 28 by a spring- urged pressure-plate 25 acting against the other face of gear 22. The pressure exerted by spring 26 on plate 25 can be varied by a nut 27. Shaft 21 is driven from shaft 20 by engagement of gear 22 with a gear 23 fixed on shaft 20, and since gear 23 is smaller than gear 22, shaft 21 rotates at a faster rate than shaft 20. When, as a result of sheet S becoming taut, roller 9 (and hence shaft 21) is constrained to rotate at the same rate as roller 8 (and hence shaft 20), slippage occurs between gear 22 and shaft 20.
