Abstract

1,147,393. Electrolytic removal of metal. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. Feb. 6, 1967 [Feb. 11, 1966], No.6064/66. Heading C7B. A permanent marking is formed on a metal surface by applying a resist coating of synthetic resin, curing the resin by heat-treatment and electrolytically dissolving away a greater thickness of metal from the uncoated areas than from the coated areas. The resins used may be esterified rosin-maleic acid, cresylic or phenolic resins dissolved in propylene glycol to form a coating material and the metal surface may be razor blade strip, both faces being treated by passage around a pair of rollers in a S-shaped path, the rollers being connected as anodes and partially surrounded by cylindrical cathodes. The treatment may cause polishing or etching. Preferably the rollers are of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta or W. Reference is made to the use of the same arrangement for electro-polishing the razor blade strip or electroforming or electro-finishing it as in Specification 1, 096, 411.
