Abstract

1423831 Razor blades WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 4 April 1973 [8 April 1972 (5)] 16292/72 16293/72 16294/72 16296/72 and 16298/72 Heading B4B A razor blade comprises a single crystal of alumina having a cutting edge thereon. The crystal is secured, e.g. by a resin adhesive to a supporting member, e.g. of plastics or metal which member may be formed with a guard bar adjacent the cutting edge and arranged to be gripped by a handle. The cutting edge may be formed on the crystal chemical methods, e.g. by dissolution or etching or by a combination of chemical and abrasive methods. The final shaping of the cutting edge may be provided by ion bombardment using an ion beam of appropriate shape. The strength of the crystal may be increased by including a concentration of "large ions" in the surface of the crystal adjacent the cutting edge; the ions can be introduced into the surface by coating the surface of the crystal with a suitable compound containing the large ions and then heating the coating. The crystal may be coated with a plastics, e.g. P.T.F.E. to improve the shaving characteristics; in addition, the blade may be coated with a metal, e.g. chromium.
