Abstract
225,662. Scantlebury, F. H. Oct. 8, 1923. Sand-blast.-In carving stone by sand-blast, the surface 11 to be carved is coated with a permanently flexible compressible adhesive material, for example comprising glue, glycerine, litharge, and a preservative, which is reduced to a liquid state and poured on to the surface, a dam 10 having been placed previously around the edges of the surface. When the coating is set, the design to be carved, for example a letter, Fig. 6, is placed on the coating which is then sprayed or otherwise covered with whitewash or whitening. The letter &c. is then removed and the design is cut through the coating, parts then being removed to expose the parts of the surface of the stone that are to be sand-blasted. Or the whole surface of the coating may be sprayed with the whitewash, and the design cut through the coating. After sandblasting, the remaining portions of the coating are stripped off. The design may be cut to different depths in different parts by removing successively portions of the coating and sandblasting the whole of the exposed surface after each removal. Specification 137,303 is referred to.
