Abstract

1,146,204. Laminates. STEPHENSON, MILLS Ltd. 27 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19849/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A method of producing a laminated fibre product comprises combing and distributing fibrous material consisting at least in part of animal hair to form a lap or batt 11, treating it with a bonding agent in one or more stages 14, 21, to permeate the thickness of the lap or batt and to bond adjacent fibres at points where one fibre crosses another, allowing partial curing or setting of the bonding agent to occur, e.g. by passing the lap through a heat treatment chamber 15, and then subjecting superimposed layers of the fibrous product, after cutting it into sheets, to pressure in a press to continue the curing and setting of the bonding agent. The fibres are preferably a blend of hog's hair and coconut fibre and the bonding agent, which is sprayed on the lap, is preferably a natural or synthetic rubber latex or other elastomeric dispersion with fillers. A phenolic resin may also be added. Organic and inorganic colouring pigments may be added. By varying the proportions of bonding medium from the sprays 14 and 21 and the pressure of application a migration of fibres may occur so that one side of the lap is denser than the other. In an embodiment, pressure is effected such that the laps or batts retain their separate identity and a pair thereof having varying density across their thickness are joined on their less dense surfaces 31.
