Abstract

1,146,017. Apparatus for contact heating or cooling of fluids or granular material. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. 18 March, 1966 [19 March, 1965], No. 12120/66. Headings F4B, F4K and F4U. A rotary tube 1 in which a body of liquid or pulverulent material is brought into heat exchange contact with a gas or vapour, includes within the tube a barrier at least part of which is helicoidal, so arranged that as the tube and its barrier are rotated the body of liquid or pulverulent material is confined in a segment of the tube defined by the chord 18-19, whilst the gas or vapour passes through the cylindrical zone defined by the circle 11. The barrier shown comprises a number n of coaxial helical baffles 21, 22 . . . 28 (in the described embodiment n = 8), each baffle having an angular dimension of 360/n + A degrees, where A degrees is the magnitude of the angle 9, Fig. 1, subtended at the tube axis by the chord 18, 19 (A not being greater than 180 degrees). The tube is rotated in a direction 10 which is opposite to the direction of winding of the helical baffles 21-28 (shown as a left-hand winding in the lower half of Fig. 2). In a modification when the apparatus is used as a calcining furnace for aluminium oxide or as a cooling device for calcined aluminium oxide, the helicoidal baffles have each preferably an angular dimension of between 360/n degrees and 360/n + A degrees where the dimensions A and n are as specified above. The rotary tube may be horizontal or slightly inclined to the horizontal. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4), the end regions (33, 34) of the baffles may be plane, only the central region (31) being helicoidal. In yet another modification a second barrier similar to that described but of opposite hand may be disposed at another location in the tube so as to retain the body of fluid between the two barriers.
