Abstract

1394829 Drawing sheet glass GLAVERBEL 28 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 36016/71 Heading C1M An apparatus for producing sheet glass by the upward drawing of a ribbon from molten glass in a drawing chamber includes at least one cooler through which cooling fluid is circulated mounted in the drawing chamber and at least two vertically spaced baffles extending between the cooler and the ribbon, the baffles being orientated to arrest downward movement of gas currents falling on to the baffle from the portion of the cooler located above the baffle. Each baffle consists of a stainless steel lattice. Generally each cooler comprises a number of superimposed tubes 30, 31 (Fig. 3), between which is mounted a rotatable rod 33 which extends to a position outside the drawing chamber, the baffle 34 being mounted on the rod so that its orientation can be altered by rotation of the rod. Coolers with associated baffles may be provided on both sides of the ribbon or merely on that side of the ribbon adjacent the end wall of the kiln containing the molten glass. Baffles may be provided on both sides of each cooler. In one embodiment (Figs. 6 and 7) gas ejectors 68, 69 are provided which displace gases across coolers 12 on the side thereof remote from the ribbon. A control device 72 ensures that the ejectors are operated alternately.
