Abstract
1294022 Metal-vapour lamps COMPAGNIE ELECTRO-MECANIQUE 22 April 1970 [28 April 1969] 19272/70 Heading H1D A mercury-vapour lamp doped for example with InI is adapted to operate vertically and is cooled so that the upper portion of the arc tube 1 disposed inside a transparent envelope 3 is cooler than the lower portion to prevent the dopant from settling out. The temperature difference is aided by having a larger heat exchange area per unit height and a thinner annular space inside the envelope at the top of the arc tube. In further embodiments the arc tube may be of uniform cross-section and the temperature difference aided by the use of an envelope of non-uniform diameter or by providing additional means to cool the upper portion of the arc tube, e.g. a flow of cooling gas.
