Abstract

Mechanical stoking.-The fuel-feeding shovel is mounted loosely on a rotating shaft, and its motion may be accelerated by springs while actually projecting the fuel, which is fed to the back of it. In one construction, Figs. 1 and 5, the shovel P is secured to a drum loosely mounted on the rotating shaft R. Within the drum is a coil spring S<1> secured at one end to the drum, and at the other to a disk R<1> keyed to the shaft. The drum and shovel are held fixed to allow winding of the spring by a catch S<4> engaging a recess in the drum, and, when the finger C on the disk R<1> releases the catch, the spring operates the shovel and a charge of fuel is projected into the furnace. To allow variations of the amount of winding given to the spring, the catch S<4> is carried by an adjustable arm L. The fuel is supplied from a hopper F, and fed by a pusher F<1> to the back of the shovel casing. The pusher is operated from the shaft R through a cam F<2> and a lever F<3>. In a modification, Fig. 3, a pinion G secured to the shovel gears with a second pinion G<1> to which the end of a spring S<x> is fixed eccentrically. The shovel and pinion G are operated from the shaft R through the finger C, and an abutment C<1> fixed to or adjustable on the pinion.
