Abstract

1,144,902. Electric clocks. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 17, 1966 [March 5, 1965], No.9545/65. Heading G3T. A clock indexing mechanism comprises a toothed index wheel 35 arranged for step by step rotation under the control of an oscillating indexing lever (31, Fig. 2 not shown), which is itself controlled by an oscillating balance wheel 17 through a step down transmission formed by gears 25, 27, 29. Mounted on the balance wheel 17 is an arm 19 and a coil 18 which sweeps through a gap 20 between poles 21 of a permanent magnet. The pinion 25 is fixed to the shaft 16 of the balance wheel and meshes with the gear-wheel 27. A pinion 29 fixed to the gear-wheel 27 engages a toothed segment 30 of the lever (31) which has pallets (33, 34) engaging the index wheel 35. The pallets impart a step by step rotation to the index wheel to which is fixed a worm gear 37 engaging a worm-wheel 38 mounted on a shaft (39). A worm gear 40 also mounted on the shaft (39) transmits the step by step rotation to a worm-wheel 41 fixed to an output shaft 42 which drives the minutes hand. Step down gearing 44 drives the hours hand shaft 43. In a second embodiment, the pinion on the balance wheel meshes directly with a toothed segment of the indexing lever and the index wheel is formed in two parts connected by a spring.
