Abstract

1,144,137. Web-feed platen press. BERISFORDS Ltd. 7 June, 1967 [18 June, 1966], No. 27308/66. Heading B6C. Apparatus for accurately over-printing webs which already carry definite patterns or repeating indicia comprises delivery rollers one of which is arranged to be driven intermittently under the control of a photo-electric sensing device for the patterns or indicia; and a printing head which operates in synchronism with the drive, printing occurring while the web is at rest. Fig. 1, is a side view wherein a patterned tape 64 is led from a feed reel 56 between delivery rollers 39, 40, across a support 10, under a reciprocating printing head 12 and a photo-electric sensing device 57 to a take-up reel 20. A motor 18 drives the main drive shaft 28 through a gear-box 25; one end of shaft 28 carries an eccentric 53 which causes reciprocation of the printing head 12. A gear-wheel (31) fast to shaft 28 meshes with a complementary gear-wheel (32) (Fig. 4, not shown), drives the take-up drive shaft 34 and hence the take-up reel spindle 16 through a slipping clutch arrangement which serves to keep the tape under tension. Also carried on drive shaft 28 is an eccentric crank 52 connected to a chain 51 passing over a free-wheel sprocket 47 carried on the drive shaft 41 of delivery roller 40; thus rotation of the crank 52 produces back-and-forth rotation of sprocket 47 in synchronism with reciprocation of printing head 12. The photoelectric sensing device 57 controls two electromagnets (46, 54) (Fig. 4, not shown) which are associated with a clutch disc (55) on the sprocket 47 and a brake disc (45) on the drive shaft 41. The sensing device 57 is adjustable for the presence of different indicia or patterns on the tapes.
