Abstract
923,565. Marking machines; feeding foil. ADOLPH GOTTSCHO Inc. June 30, 1961 [July 25, 1960], No. 23693/61. Classes 100 (2) and 100 (4). A marking device is mounted on an elongated cylindrical structural member 20 of a powerdriven machine, e.g. a bread-wrapping machine, and is adjustable longitudinally of the structural member, the device comprising a marking element which is moved cyclically into and out of marking position and means connecting the marking element to a drive shaft 38 which is rotatable in the cylindrical structural member. The marking device is carried by four rods 12, 13, 14, 15 which are mounted on a bracket 16 keyed to the member 20. The bracket 16 is movable along the member 20 and can be clamped in any position therealong by means of a clamping screw 28, 29. The drive shaft 38 is tubular and is driven by any suitable means through a gear 40. A shaft 36 is slidable longitudinally in the shaft 38 and is keyed thereto by a key 42. The rods 12-15 carry a mounting plate 50 in which the shaft 36 is journalled, the shaft 36 having an enlarged end part 154 on the left-hand side of the plate 50 as seen in Fig. 3. The end part 154 carries a crank-pin 152 which is connected by a link 150 to a pin 156 extending between a pair of arms 140, 141 pivoted on the rod 13. A similar pair of arms, of which one arm 144 only is shown, is pivoted on the rod 15 and the two pairs of arms between them support a carrier 130 for a die 131. Thus as the shaft 36 rotates the die 131 is moved up and down, out of and into contact with a web of wrapping paper passing through the machine to print an image thereon from a strip of blocking foil which is fed between the die and the paper. The die may be heated electrically. A shaft 60 journalled in a sleeve 68 secured to the plate 50 is driven from the shaft 36 by a belt 66 and pulley 64 through a slipping clutch, the friction between the clutch parts being adjustable. The sleeve 68 carries a flange 70 at its outer end and a hub is secured to the flange on the opposite side to the sleeve 68, the shaft 60 passing through the centre of the hub. A supply spool 160 of blocking foil is rotatably mounted on the hub and is braked by means of a leaf-spring mounted in a recess in the hub and engaging the inner surface of the spool. After leaving the supply spool the blocking foil passes round guide rollers 164, 166 which conduct it beneath the die, between feed rollers 120, 168, over a guideway 170 and back on to a take-up spool frictionally mounted on the end of the shaft 60. The takeup spool, Fig. 7, comprises an integral flange and hub portion 74, 75 and a flange 76 carrying pins 195 slotted at 196. The pins 195 are frictionally engaged in grooves 194 in the hub 75 when the spool is assembled and one of the slots 196 serves as an anchor for the leading end of the blocking foil strip. The torque applied to the shaft 60 is sufficient to keep the foil strip taut but is not enough to feed the foil without the help of the feed rollers. The feed roller 120 is rotated intermittently by means of a pawl 124 and ratchet 122, the pawl being carried on an arm 116 which is oscillated through a linkage by an oscillating shaft 108 the drive for which is taken from the shaft 36 via a cam 100 and a cam follower arm 106, Fig. 1. The blocking foil is advanced while the die is making its upward stroke.
