Abstract

1299708 Variable speed ratchet gear PAKO CORP 27 Oct 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 51059/70 Heading F2D [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for feeding web material 12 intermittently through a machine comprises (a) feed rollers 13, 14 and 16, 17 in driving engagement with a flexible member 20, i.e. a chain, attached at one end to a spring 21 and anchored at the other end 50, (b) a member 28 on a disc 26 rotated one revolution for each machine cycle, the member 28 contacting the chain 20 during each revolution to move forwardly the run of the chain between the feed rollers so as to drive the rollers and (c) means for adjusting the initial position of the member 28 relatively to the chain 20 to vary the feed. The apparatus may be used in a machine wherein photographic paper passes from a reel 10 to a continuously driven roller 11 forming a loop 12a, thence to a photographic printing area A from which it passes to a rewind reel 18. The rollers 16, 17 are of slightly larger diameter than the rollers 13, 14 so as to tension the web at station A. The chain 20 drives the lower rollers 14, 17 of the pairs of feed rollers through pinions 22, 24 and one-way clutches the upper rollers being geared to the lower rollers. For adjusting the relative positions of the member 28 and chain 20, the anchorage 50 can be moved by screw mechanism 46 or the position of the axis of the disc 26 may be varied. The apparatus provides a gradual acceleration followed by a gradual deceleration during a feed stroke. A brake disc on the roller 14 is engaged by a brake band 36 tensioned by a lever 30 operated by a cam 42 on the disc 26 before the end of the feed stroke to prevent over-run of the web. The chain 20 is guided between the disc 26 and a fixed shield (52) the adjacent surfaces of the parts 26, (52) being coated with low-friction vibration-damping material.
