Abstract

1,143,741. Mould and core materials; ingot moulds. SEKISUI SUPONJI KOGYO, K.K. 18 Feb., 1966 [20 Feb., 1965], No. 7301/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Spherical particles less than 5 mm. in diameter, of a foamed resin such as polystyrene, polymethyl-methacrylate or a co-polymer of styrene and methyl-methacrylate, are included in a composition (comprising olivine or silica sand, possibly alumina, an exothermic mixture of aluminium particles and iron oxide, and waterglass as a binder) for the mouding of a hot top. Before use the hot top is heated to get rid of the foamed resin particles and leave pores. A composition comprising, by volume, 38 parts A1 particles, 18 parts Al 2 O 3 , 13 parts iron oxide and 31 parts (olivine or silica) sand is mentioned as modified by reducing the Al content to 23 parts, a volume of foamed polystyrene equal to this and the sand content then being added. There may be 12-30% Al by volume and a volume of foamed resin equal in volume to the volume of sand and Al. There is not less than 15¢% by volume of sand.
