Abstract

1,143,154. Digital lamp control. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. 2 May, 1967 [10 Jan., 1967], No. 20321/67. Heading G4H. A hundred numbers entered in a store 1 are caused to control the amplitudes of voltages applied to corresponding ones of a hundred lamps 2 by being read out in succession by outputs 15 of counter 3 and compared in gates 9 with a range of numbers 0-31 presented in successive read-out cycles by counter 6, agreement signals passing through distributer 11 to corresponding ones of a hundred stores 13 which are reset at the end of each 32 read-out cycles to produce a succession of pulses, the lengths of which represent the numbers in the store. The pulse-length signals are smoothed and applied to lamps 2. The numbers have values from 0 to 31 and are each stored as five bits in a column 4 of core store 1. The hundred columns are energized in turn by outputs of counter 3 fed by clock pulses. When the counter changes from 99 to 0 a pulse steps counter 6. This counter is a 5-stage binary counter and counts from 0 to 31 in 32 cycles of counter 3. A stored number gives an output from comparator 9 at a certain instant in the 32 cycle period and this is applied via distributer 11, controlled by the output 15 of counter 3, to reset a corresponding one-bit store in memory 13. These are all set by the cycling pulse of counter 6 so that if a low number is stored in 1, the corresponding one-bit store is reset early in the 32-cycle period and a correspondingly short pulse is provided before the memory is reset. These pulses, one in each 32- cycle period, are smoothed in L-P filters 14 and applied to lamps 2 to adjust their brightness to the desired one of 32 values.
