Abstract

A combined spring retainer and lock assembly on an engine poppet valve, comprises a plate 23 having a tapered bore 27, a locking member 24 for a valve stem 17 located in the bore, the lock having a plurality of fingers, e.g. four, separated by slots 40 and edges 48 (in Figs. 3 and 6 the member 24 is formed in two halves) adapted to be contracted towards each other by the tapered bore, beads 42 formed on the fingers to seat in a groove 31 on the stem 17, the locking member being spread at end 50 to retain it in the bore whilst allowing axial movement relative to the bore 27 when the spring is assembled on the stem 17. A slot 39 is formed at the end of each slot 40 to increase the flexibility of the fingers The beads 42 have tapered shoulders 47 to facilitate assembly, and radially extending walls 44. In Fig. 7, not shown, alignment of the two halves of the locking member is facilitated by a projection (52) in the edge (48) of one half, which locates in a recess (53) in the other half. In Figs. 8, 9 and 10, not shown, the projection (52a) has tapered sides (56) and (57) which locate in and deform the sides (59), (60) of a rectangular recess (53a) to prevent oil leakage through the member. In Figs. 11 to 13, not shown, the locking member is formed in one piece having a tubular base portion split at (80), and an upper portion divided into fingers by splits (84), one of which lines up with the split (80). The splits (84) have enlarged middle portions (91). In Fig. 14, not shown, the upper portion is divided into three splits (94).
