Abstract

1,139,264. Pipes. INSTITUT de RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCATSE. 22 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 23616/67. Heading F2P. A method of manufacturing a refractory conduit for transporting molten materials, such as molten steel, comprises fitting an external refractory tube 2 concentrically on an inner refractory tube 1 to define an annular space therebetween, inserting a foil 4 into said space about the inner tube, the melting point of the foil material being lower than the intended working temperature of the conduit, and filling the annular space with granular insulating material 4. The tubes may be of sintered alumina and the insulating material may be alumingranules. Other ceramics such as zirconium oxide or zirconia may be used for the tubes and the granular material. The foil may be of aluminium, tin, zinc or plastics material. Expansion of the granular material is accommodated by fusion of the foil during use, the molten material of the foil spreading into the interstices of the granular material.
