Abstract
1,138,519. Multiple hearth furnaces. HARROP CERAMIC SERVICE CO. 14 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 46107/66. Heading F4B. A multiple hearth furnace comprises a series of sub-housings 21, 23, 25, 26 each containing a hearth 24 made up of inclined silicon carbide plates 44, between which are stainless steel or silicon carbide push plates 46 which are reciprocated by an eccentric 48. Each hearth 24 incorporates three burners 28, 30, 32, upper and lower flues 40, 42, and ducts 43 for cooling or introducing an artificial atmosphere. Material introduced into the top sub-housing 21 through a hopper 22 passes beneath an adjustable gate 54 on to the first hearth 24 whence it travels down over each hearth in turn, aided by the push plates and also agitated thereby. In another embodiment (Fig. 3) the housing (100) is straight sided, to aid sealing for partial vucuum heating. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2) the hearths are parallelly inclined and can be adjusted in inclination by a supporting column and associated power screw. The angle of inclination is related to the angle of repose of the material in the furnace.
