Abstract

1,176,069. Shaft furnaces. C. C. SCHOTT. 23 Oct., 1967, No. 48097/67. Heading F4B. A shaft furnace 32 for melting scrap vehicles comprises two rows of burners 24 disposed in tapered nozzles 22 above the hearth 16, a watercooled restriction 26 above the combustion chamber having an upper surface 28 inclined at from 0-45 degrees to the horizontal and air injectors 42 disposed sloping upwardly in the shaft wall above the restriction. Closable openings 44 allow of the introduction of oxygen or acetylene lances to burn off any material sticking to the surface 28. Two vehicles are squeezed together as a charge unit by a pair of semicylindrical jaws (see Division B3), said charge units being then lifted by a hoist (133, Fig. 1) and placed end-to-end in the furnace. The lowermost charge unit seats on the restriction 26 or on coke in the lower part of the furnace (Fig. 10).
