Abstract

A coil binding machine includes means for compressing the coil and a guide track for the binding material formed in part by the binding head and in part by a mandrel movably axially of the coil, the part on the head including an upper-position which forms a closure element for the track, openable to permit introduction of the coil. Loops of wire (not shown) are fed by conveyers 32, 33 into a collecting " basket " 34 to form the coil. The base of the basket is formed by arms of bell-cranks 39 and when the coil is complete, the basket is lowered until the arms pivot down to allow the coil to drop. The binding means beneath the basket comprises two opposed heads 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, each having band feed means 14, reels of binding material 13 and means for applying metal clips from magazines 16 (all not detailed). Each head also includes a vertical and an upper part of the band guide track 17. The upper part 18 is hinged back by means 20, 21 to allow the coil to drop on to the lower part of the tracks which is formed by an annular support 7 resting on a ledge on a vertically movable pillar 6. The pillar 6 also carries the remaining portions of the tracks 17. When the coil drops on the support 7, the latter is in a lowered position. It is then raised by means 3, 4 to compress the coil against the now closed track portions 18 and binding on two opposite sides of the coil is carried out in known manner. Each head now travels 90 degrees about the coil axis on tracks 10 and applies two further bands. The pillar and support are now lowered until the support 7 is left resting on a table 9 from which the coil may be discharged laterally.
