Abstract
1,026,388. Apparatus for binding coils and bundles. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962], No. 2824/63. Heading B8C. A method of tying coils or bundles of wire or the like with binding wire comprises storing the binding wire on two spools mounted at a binding station on a holder situated on one side of the article to be bound, connecting the ends of the binding wire extending from the spools, transferring the spools to another holder on the other side of the article so that the binding wire forms a loop around three sides of the article, rotating this holder to twist the binding wire on the fourth side of the article, and cutting the twist approximately through the middle. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a coil of wire 2 is transferred by a pusher 3 on to an intermittently anticlockwise movable turntable 5 which has eight apertures 8, 9, each with coil locating walls 11. At the first station a supporting plate 13 rises into the aperture to prevent the coil 2 from fouling as it is thrust in by pusher 3 to rest against the wall 11. At the second and third stations the coil is bound on the inside and outside respectively with wire and at the fourth station a cross-element 46 rises to turn the coil through 90 degrees. The coil is then bound on the outside and inside at stations five and six respectively and is transferred off the turntable at station seven. These operations ensure that the coil is bound at four places angularly separated by 90 degrees. The binding stations are all of the same construction except that the inner ones are mounted on the central column 6 (Fig. 3) of the turntable and the outer ones on columns situated on the exterior of the turntable. The spools 16, 17 are freely supported in slots in a spool-holder 15 which is raised by a ram 14 so that the spools are pushed through the apertures 8, 9 on to the upper holder 26, the wires, joined at 44, looping about the coil 2. This spool-holder is then rotated to twist the wires together; the severing being effected by a cutter 38 (Fig. 1). Coils of wire are transferred on to the turntable only at alternate movements thereof so that they are at alternate stations and the spools are transferred from the upper spoolholder back to the lower, again by raising the ram 14, while a coil is not at the particular station. The spools are held in the upper spoolholders by sliding pins entering apertures in blocks at the ends of their casings (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown), a loop is formed both when the spools are transferred to the upper spoolholder and also when they are transferred back to the lower one, both spoolholders being vertically movable and rotatable to twist the wire. It is thus not necessary for there to be an idle stage when the spools are transferred from the upper to the lower spoolholder. In a further embodiment (Fig. 9) the coils of wire 70 are carried by a conveyer so that they come to rest against an apertured vertical plate 84. The two spools 80, 81 are mounted on pins 83 on a spoolholder 82 on a horizontally reciprocable carrier 74 and are passed one through and one below the coil and transferred to pins 79 mounted on another spoolholder 77 on a horizontally reciprocable carrier 72. The spoolholder 77 is then rotated to twist the wires together and a cutter 87 mounted on the plate 84 cuts through the middle of the twist. The spools are then passed back to the pins 83 and the process repeated. The spools may be retained on the pins by magnetic means. Spare spools may be mounted on pins 83 on the holder 82, the latter being rotatable through 180 degrees to bring them to the working position. Spools.-In the first embodiment, each spool is inserted inside a cylindrical magazine 18 (Fig. 5, not shown), one half of whose periphery is closed, and located therein by a pin 19 which is prevented from rotating by a split ring 20, and which has in its centre portion a groove 21 engaging a spring 22 to effect a braking effect on the spool. The side walls of the magazine are fitted with retaining blocks 24 and have perforations 25 near the peripherally closed side to restore the balance. In the second embodiment, each spool comprises a tubular wheel 90 (Fig. 13, not shown) and a tubular axle 91 held by a cover 92 which can be threadedly inserted into the shell 90. The binding material is in the form of a coil and wire is withdrawn from the inside thereof through an opening 93.
