[Also in Group XVII] A thread package comprises a series of flat helically-wound layers of thread with separating leaves between each layer, adjacent convolutions of each layer overlapping. A thread pack comprises a series of layers 4 of flattened helically-wound thread or rope with adjacent convolutions overlapping, the threads being supported at opposite ends by two separating strips 5, successive layers and separating strips being positioned at right-angles, or at another angle, to one another with the ends of the superimposed strips 5 secured to one another at the corners of the pack. Distance strips 9, Fig. 5a, may be inserted alongside the ends of the thread layer under the outer edge of the separating strips 5. The pack, which is mounted on a baseplate, may have a transparent cover with a hole in the centre placed on top and be enclosed at the bottom and sides by a wrapper glued thereto. The pack may be enclosed in a box. The base of the pack may have retaining means, such as a drawing pin, secured thereto. The pack or its casing may be provided with a thread cutter. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 9, the threads of all the layers are parallel and are held at one end only, by a separating leaf 21 folded zig-zag fashion. Apparatus for forming the pack includes a bobbin 32 and guides 33, 34 carried by a disc 35 rotated about a fixed member 37 in which are mounted the prongs 39 of a coiling mandrel, the guide 34 or the mandrel being moved axially during winding. Each prong 39 comprises two sector-sectioned segments 41, 42 which are moved longitudinally relative to one another, to cause the convolutions to overlap, while at the same time moving towards one another about their outer, contacting, edges so that the circumferential length of the convolutions remains unchanged. After the windings have been overlapped a table 45 is moved up to mandrel and a tongue 47 moved' on to the layer of wound thread. The segments 41, 42 of one or both prongs are then moved further towards each other about the contacting edge to loosen the layer and the mandrel is withdrawn. Separating strips 48 cut from a roll 49 are picked up by suction means 50 and pressed by a member 52, which may be cooled over opposite ends of the layer. The tongue 47 is withdrawn and an outer presser member 53, which may be heated, then moves down to press the outer parts of the strips, to the undersides of which an adhesive has been applied. The table 45 is then turned 90 degrees about its vertical axis and a further layer and strips placed on top. After the requisite number of layers has been built up the completed pack 60 is ejected along a guideway 61. A base frame 57 to start the pack is fed over a guide 59 to the table 45.
