Abstract

1,192,743. Packaging textile slivers. TAYLOR WORDSWORTH & CO. Ltd. 5 Feb., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967], No. 5851/67. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] In a baling press of the type in which a coiled sliver located in a can is compressed between the false bottom of the can and an upper member, the compression is effected in two stages, the first stage being effected within the can and the second, final stage, being effected outside of the can. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the sliver is coiled around a spindle 33 carried by the false bottom plate 34 of a can 35. The upper end of the spindle is releasably connectible with a collet 32 carried by a ram 29 itself mounted upon a vertically reciprocable framework 15, 17, 20. In operation, a can containing a coiled sliver is wheeled to a position below the framework and the framework lowered until plate 21 carried thereby engages the upper surface of the coil. The ram 29 is then actuated to lower the collet into engagement with the spindle after which the collet is raised to pull the bottom plate 34 upwardly thus effecting the initial compression. The framework is then raised to raise the compressed coil clear of the can after which the ram 29 is actuated to further raise the bottom plate and effect the final compression, during which compression strings 40 are tied round the package thus formed, the strings being accommodated in grooves 41 in the plates 21 and 34. Finally the bottom plate is lowered and is released by the collet and allowed to fall back into the can, the bale being retained for subsequent removal on the plate 21 by a spring plate 21 over which the strings 40 pass.
