Abstract

A sliver coiler has means to maintain the coiler head 14 in constant and substantially uniform pressure contact with each coil of sliver successively packed into the can 8. In the embodiment shown the coiler head is vertically movable and rests upon the sliver 40 in the can, while the can is urged upwards by fluid entering casing 42 through opening in turntable 6. The coiler head has guide columns 12, 13 slidably mounted in bars 3 and 5, and a drive shaft 15 driven by collar 16 to rotate the tubewheel and calender rolls. In modifications the sliver can may rest on turntable 6 and have a bottom slidable therein and urged upwards by the fluid pressure, or the desired pressure may be obtained merely from the fluid pressure with the coiler head being fixed, or merely from the coiler head with the sliver can and the bottom thereof being fixed. When fluid pressure is used it is increased during coiling to maintain a uniform pressure between the uppermost sliver coil and the coiler head. The coiler head may be lifted and lowered hydraulically or pneumatically.
