Abstract

1,137,217. Shaft couplings. A. FISCHER. 14 July, 1967 [16 July, 1966], No. 32446/67. Heading F2U. [Also in Division A6] A universally jointed shaft coupling, for use in a constructional toy, comprises two female screw threaded members 1 and 2 joined by a universal joint. A resilient male screw member complements each female member and is provided with a central bore 12 to accommodate a shaft 13 or 14. As the male member engages the tapering surface 11 of the female, the surfaces 12 clamp the shaft. A preferred form of universal joint is provided by a member 3 which has four coplanar pins at rightangles to one another. Bifurcated parts of the coupling members fit over the pins as in Fig. 1. The male member may comprise a knurled portion 15 preferably in the form of gear toothing, to facilitate manual gripping. The male member may be longitudinally slotted to facilitate clamping into engagement with the shaft.
