Abstract

778,858. Oars. ELLIOT EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1955 [Oct. 21, 1954], No. 30342/54. Class 114. [Also in Group XXVIII] A joint for uniting two sections of an oar comprises a spigot unit 1 formed with a tubular socket part 3 to receive the end of one section, the closed end of the part being integral with a hollow tapered spigot 4 terminating in a screwthreaded extension 6, and a socket unit 2 formed with a similar socket 9 for the end of the other section the socket being integral with a tapered socket portion 10 corresponding to the spigot 4 and connected to the socket 9 by a threaded sleeve portion 11 adapted for engagement with the threaded extension. The end face 12 of the tapered socket 10 abuts a shoulder formed on the socket part 3 when the units are engaged, a packing ring in a recess 5 therein making the joint firm. The screw thread 6 is slotted longitudinally at 7 to provide an escape for foreign matter and the outside of the tapered socket 10 may be recessed to provide a hold for a rowlock.
