Abstract

1,136,403. Container closures. READS Ltd. 16 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965], No. 6794/65. Addition to 904,664. Heading B8T. A pressure-relieving closure cap 1 for a container such as a drum is moulded from a plastics material and has a central, axially directed spigot 7 providing a blind bore in the cap, a radial hole 9 in the side of the spigot normally being closed by a rubber &c. band 10 fitting tightly around the spigot. If excess pressure develops in the container, the rubber &c. band 10 is forced away from the hole 9 in the manner of a spring-biased pressure relief valve, to allow venting of gas. The spigot 7 is formed at the apex of an inwardly-directed cone-shaped centre portion of the cap 1, and is aligned with its blind end 8 directed towards the outside of the container. The depth of the cone-shaped centre portion of the cap 1 is greater than the length of the spigot 7, so that the blind end 8 of the latter lies inside a ring-shaped groove 11 in the top of the cap. A protecting disc 12 having gas escape holes 14 is snapped into the groove 11, to close the open end of the cone-shaped centre portion of the cap and cover the spigot 7. Screw threads 3 are formed around the inside of the cap skirt.
