Abstract

1,136,101. Surge arresters. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ZHELEZNODOROZHNOGO TRANSPORTA. 4 Jan., 1966, No. 385/66. Heading H2H. ' A surge arrester comprises an arc suppression chamber formed by bolting together two suitably-recessed plates of plastics material, inside which are accommodated a pair of electrodes 1 and a pair of arc blow-out permanent magnets 2. The blow-out effect is enhanced by the parallel lower portions of electrodes 1 and by L-shaped steel plates 3, which also serve as electrode holders and terminals, and have screws 6 for adjusting the spark-over voltage of the gap. The central portion of the chamber has a restricted slot-like cross-section, Fig. 1 (not shown), which leads into a labyrinthine passage formed by interengaging corrugations on the chamber plates, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The passage vents to atmosphere and air is drawn in through ducts 16, 17, although for outdoor use the chamber may be enclosed in a hermetically-sealed metal casing having internal insulation. The chamber is structurally combined with a stack of non-linear resistors, Fig. 1 (not shown), and has external polepieces extending from the magnets 2 to the arcing zones, which magnets may be replaced by steel-cored coils. Each plate comprises a body section and an arc-suppressing section bonded together by epoxy resin. Additional trigger electrodes (not shown) may be placed below the spark gap between the parallel sections of the electrodes 1 and separated by an insulating gasket.
