Abstract

1,105,716. Surge diverters. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 25 Aug., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 38192/66. Heading H2H. A surge diverter of the self-driving type comprises pairs of arc chambers formed by dividing the space between opposed recessed insulating plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, the division being effected by an insulating plate 28 and spacer 35 which are coaxial with a tubular electrode 15 whose internal surface co-operates with rod-shaped electrodes 14, 16 to form a spark-gap 17 in each chamber. The electrodes 14, 16 are longitudinally offset so that the spark-gaps (formed by the shortest distance between members 15 and 14 or 16) are not aligned and during operation current flows around a part 17<SP>1</SP> of the circumference of electrode 15 to produce a magnetic field driving the arc between members 15 and 14 or 16 away towards a longitudinal split 29 in the member 15, projections 24 from plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP> serving to further stretch and cool the arc. A vent 11 is provided in each arc chamber and recesses 21 in the plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP> receive the electrode 15 which is located in position by notches in its edges, Fig. 7 (not shown), cooperating with projections 23 on the plates 12, 121. The assembly may have further arc chambers formed by inserting in the stack insulating plates (13) each of which has its opposed faces recessed in a similar manner to the plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Further slots in members 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 15 reduce creepage between the pairs of electrodes.
