Abstract

1,136,019. Stabilized ammonium nitrate. ARMOUR & CO. 11 May, 1966, No. 20941/66. Heading C1A. Ammonium nitrate, stabilized against phase changes, is made by reacting molten anhydrous ammonium nitrate, e.g. at 110‹ to 200‹ C., with an amount of magnesium and/or calcium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, which is in excess, generally at least a 6 fold excess, of the amount desired for stabilization, to liberate ammonia and to form an ammonium nitratemagnesium/calcium nitrate melt, reducing the alkaline earth metal content of the melt to the concentration desired for stabilization, generally at least 0À6% by weight, by the addition of essentially anhydrous ammonium nitrate and recovering the liberated ammonia. The ammonia evolved may be reacted with nitric acid to produce more ammonium nitrate. Stabilized prills of ammonium nitrate may be produced from the diluted melt in a prilling tower.
