Abstract

A vertical cylindrical storage tank has its wall formed of a plurality of vertical metal panels 5, which may be prefabricated, and which are each composed of arcuate plates welded together along their curved edges, e.g. by downhand welding. The panels 5 are erected on cradles 6, and their sides are connected together by continuous vertical welds. In large structures, with the plate thickness varying up the panels, the thickness of filler material employed is made to vary in accordance with the thickness of the panel either by changing the rate of feed of filler material, or by changing the speed of welding, or by a combination of each of these procedures. The horizontal joints may be continuous, as shown, or staggered.
