Abstract
1,135,307. Calcining coke. MARATHON OIL CO. 20 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 18200/67. Heading C5E. Coke made in a drum by the delayed coking process from petroleum hydrocarbons is calcined in situ in the drum by igniting the coke at one point and introducing oxygen (air) at a point on the other side of the combustion front formed in the ignited coke. The drum, suitably insulated to withstand calcining temperatures of up to 2800 F., has an outlet at the top for combustion gases, which may be recycled to an air inlet at the bottom of the drum to control the temperature in the combustion front, which moves down the drum. Two fronts may be established, one at the top and one at the bottom, the air being supplied between them, and automatic control systems responsive to drum temperature may regulate the supply of oxygen to the drum.
