Abstract

1,068,327. Controlling hydrocarbon cracking. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 27, 1963, No. 51072/63. Heading B1X, [Also in Division G1] Determination of the absorption by a petroleum product of light in a particular band, is sued to determine the carbon residue content of the product and to control operations in a catalytic cracker. Thus the transmitted light may be used to control a process for stabilizing the carbon residue content to a particular value in oil refining operations, or alternatively to control the regeneration of the catalyst, by varying the temperature, duration or amount of regeneration air used to bum the coke off the catalyst. In a method of controlling the cracker as shown in Fig. 3 the output 54 from the cracker is mixed with naphtha in proportioning pump 62 and submitted to spectrometric analysis by apparatus 68 which feeds a recorder-controller 72. The latter controls the valve 10 supplying the fuel to the heater 6 to vary the temperature of the mixture applied to the flash zone 14 of the cracker. Alternatively. the controller 72 may operate on valve 78, as that if the carbon residue is shown to be too high the valve is moved to a more closed position to increase the amount of recycled oil. Thus the amount of lower boiling point oil flowing downwardly to tray 18 increases and as some of this is recycled via line 48 more of this oil appears in the input to the cracker, so reducing the carbon residue. Calibration details for correlating absorption against carbon residues are given.
