Abstract

1,240,182. Regenerative furnace cracking. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 11 Oct., 1968, No. 48193/68. Heading C5E. In a regenerative furnace process for cracking hydrocarbons in the presence of a diluent gas, e.g. steam, to form acetylenic and/or olefinic compounds, particularly acetylene and ethylene, the volume of diluent gas admitted to the furnace during the cracking step is progressively reduced so as to progressively increase the residence time of the feedstock in the furnace. This compensates for temperature drop during the cracking step and increases overall yield. The residence time may be further increased by also progressively reducing the feedstock volume, and in this case the feedstock-diluent gas ratio is preferably kept constant so as to maintain the feedstock at constant partial pressure. Detailed automatic control means for effecting the volume reductions are described. Suitable feedstocks range from ethane to gas oil, particularly propane.
