Abstract
1,135,229. Continuous-casting; mould-lining materials. MANNESMANN A.G. 24 Dec., 1965 [28 Dec., 1964], No. 54783/65. Heading B3F. For the continuous casting of slabs of high melting-point metals, such as iron and steel, to lessen the cooling in the part of a watercooled, oscillating mould in the region of the surface 4 of the molten pool (which surface moves between positions 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> with the reciprocation), the wider walls of the mould are made thicker or each has a recess filled with a metal 10 of less thermal conductivity. Alternate contraction and expansion of the strand shell to and from the mould surface is said to be avoided. The wider mould walls may be thickened by build-up welding, spraying, galvanizing or plating on the water side, with a metal of less thermal conductivity. The narrow sides of the mould are not modified. The modified parts 10 of the wide sides extend 1/ 8 to ¢ of the way down the mould from the highest plane 4<SP>1</SP> in the mould to which the molten pool rises due to the mould oscillation, the amplitude of which is controlled according to the cooling required. The mould may be lined with chromium or molybdenum 11.
