Abstract
1,134,823. Variable resistor. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Feb., 1966 [4 Nov., 1964], No. 44873/64. Heading H1S. A variable resistor has a resistive element which comprises an elongated deposit of metal on an insulating planar support 1 and is contacted by a movable contact mounted in a slot 2 in the support 1. Preferably two parallel resistive elements 5, 6 are connected in series by a continuation 7 of them at right-angles to their length (or are constituted by a single recurved element) and a movable conductive bridge member 4 is arranged to short-circuit a greater or lesser length of them as required. The resistive elements 5, 6 may taper towards their joined ends, so as to give a desired variation of resistance with the position of the bridge, or may be arranged with inverse tapers, so that large movements of the bridge result in small, controlled changes in the value of the resistance. The bridge member 4 may be in one piece with pressed contacts or may carry separate pivoted contacts, and may be biased towards the resistive elements by its inherent resilience or by a helical spring about bolt 3. Preferably the resistive elements 5, 6 are thin deposits of copper and their inner edges are parallel to slot 2. Support 1 may carry a scale, against which the position of the bridge member 4 may be read. A clamping knob may be fitted on the underside of bridge member 4 to retain it in position after adjustment.
