Abstract

1,133,756. Safe load indicators. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. 31 Oct., 1967 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 2013/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Division E1] A civil engineering machine has a boom which is luffable by a double-acting hydraulic ram 1, and a safe load indicator comprising a pivoted lever 15 acted upon by pistons 8, 13 which are subject to the pressures in the respective ends of the ram and which produce a torque on the lever corresponding to the differential reaction sustained by the ram in supporting the boom and any load suspended therefrom, the lever 15 being also loaded by means of a spring 27 subject to pressure from a cam-operated lever 21 in dependence upon the boom angle so that when the reaction sustained by the ram exceeds that necessary to support the boom and a safe load the lever 15 is moved to operate a microswitch 18 energizing an alarm such as a lamp or a bell. Downward movement of the boom is limited by a constriction restricting the passage of fluid through the line 4. The ends of the ram are respectively hydraulically connected to the pistons 8, 13 by lines 7, 12, and the pistons act on the lever 15 at points spaced from the lever pivot 16 by distances proportional to the pressure areas on either side of the ram piston 2. The microswitch 18 is adjustable about a pivot 19 by a screw 20. The lever 21 is pivoted at one end at 22 and carries at its other end a roller 23 engaged by a cam 24 which is turned about a centre 25 by an arm 26 as the boom is luffed. The spring 27 acts between the levers 15, 21 so as to load the lever 15, the load depending upon the movement of the lever 21 and therefore upon the boom position. The point at which the piston 13 acts on the lever 15 is adjustable towards or away from the pivot 16. The lines 7, 12 may include capillaries to avoid any momentary pressure increase from inadvertently operating the alarm. Although the safe load indicator as described is mechanically operated it may alternatively be operated electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically.
