Abstract

737,737. Lever load handling machines. TAYLOR & SONS (MANCHESTER), Ltd., F. March 6, 1953 [Dec. 6, 1951], No. 28611/51. Class 78 (3). A crane or like load-handling machine has a two-section jib each section of which is independently luffed by hydraulic rams supplied through a multiple control valve from a common pump, the actuating system associated with one section being maintained below a predetermined pressure by means of a relief valve the opening of which causes a cut-out valve to relieve the pressure in the system associated with the other jib section. The rear jib section 9<SP>1</SP> is luffed about a pivot 99 by a pair of rams 15 acting through an arm 13, whilst the outer jib section 9<SP>2</SP> is luffed about a pivot 18 by a ram 10 acting through a rod 11 and lever 12; lifting hooks 17 being provided at spaced positions on the outer jib to handle loads of various weights. The rams 10, 15 (Fig. 2) are fed from a reservoir 20 by a motor-driven gear pump 19 and a multiple control valve 27 which has a pair of control members 221, 22<SP>2</SP> axially movable into three positions of adjustment which respectively effect extension, retraction and holding of the associated rams. In the ram supply conduits 251, 25<SP>2</SP> are fitted pressure switches 34<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>2</SP> which together with a pressure switch 38 connected in series with switch 34<SP>2</SP>, operate audible or visual warning devices on attainment of a predetermined pressure in the conduits ; overload relief valves 35<SP>1</SP>, 35<SP>2</SP> and pilot valves 36<SP>1</SP>, 36<SP>2</SP>, 36<SP>2</SP>a. In the event of an excessive load being applied to the outer jib section 9<SP>2</SP>, an overload relief valve 43, which is adapted to open at a lower setting than that of valve 35<SP>1</SP>, opens and admits fluid from ram 10 through conduit 46 to valve 35<SP>2</SP> so moving its piston 47 and thereby by-passing the fluid from conduit 25<SP>2</SP> to the reservoir 20 via conduit 49, discharge chamber 29 of control valve 27 and conduit 30.
