Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a material handling machine, such as a backhoe, a boom is moved about a horizontal axis by fluid operated ram means having a plurality of piston areas to which pressure fluid is selectively supplied to vary the operational speed of the boom. In a first embodiment, Fig. 4, ram means consists of three hydraulic rams 30 .. 32 controlled by valves 38, 40 so that for light loads and fast speed only the rams 30, 32 are used and for heavy loads and slow speed all the rams are used. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the ram means consists of at least one ram having an annular piston 60 connected to a hollow piston rod 65 having an inner piston area 69, the piston 60 being slidably mounted on a tube 68 providing a passage for pressure fluid from a chamber 70 to the piston area 69. When light load fast speed operation of the boom is required only the piston 60 is pressurized but for heavy load low speed operation both the piston 60 and the piston area 69 are pressurized.
