A combined air separator and dirt trap in or for hot water installations comprises a housing 1, an inlet pipe 4, an outlet pipe 5, an air outlet pipe 6 inclined relative to the direction of flow along the longitudinal axis of the housing, and a sieve plate 2 locatable transverse to the direction of flow thus dividing the flow chamber of the housing into two chambers 7 and 10, with the free end of the sieve plate 2 projecting into the air outlet pipe 6 thus dividing it into two chambers. Grooves 3 in pipe 6 and the housing 1 hold the sieve plate 2, and filtered off material is removed at cleansing socket 12. If the sieve plate 2 becomes clogged, the fluid bypasses through and/or over the top of the plate 2. Outlet pipe 5 may be connected to a pump.
