Sticky articles 5, e.g. bacon slices, are introduced into an opened container 6 by means of the forward parts of a plurality of slides 2, 3, 4 adapted to move longitudinally upon one another; means 15 are provided to withdraw the lowest slide 4 with respect to the other slides after the introduction of the article 5 into the container 6, the remaining slides being successively withdrawn to place the article progressively on the container surface; after withdrawing the slides from the container, the lowest slide 4 is held fixed while the other slides are successively stopped in their rearward travel so that their forward parts are deployed in stepped relation preparatory to inserting the next article. As described, slides 2-4 are driven by a pin 15, 16 riding in slots of configuration illustrated in Fig. 12. The thicker part 15 rides freely in the wide slots 13 and the narrow part 16 in narrow slots 13: thus by reciprocating pin 15, 16 vertically and moving it horizontally, the desired motion of slides 2-4 is obtained. The slides are stopped in the desired stepped order during their rearward motion by retractable abutments 17-20.
