Abstract
113,228. Gove, H. H. July 30, J917. Valves; valve-gear.-Rotary valvesections 25, 40 are secured together by a tongue and groove connexion 44, 45, and each controls the inlet and exhaust ports of a pair of adjacent cylinders 3, 4 and 1, 2 respectively. Mixture is delivered into the interior of the valve through end ports 28, 28<a> and through a channel, between the adjacent ends of the valve-sections, which opens into a supply passage 22 in the valve casing. The charges enter the cylinders 4, 3 when ports 29, 30 in the valve 25 register with the ports 27, 26 respectively in the heads of the cylinders. The burnt gases discharge through passages 31, which deliver into chambers leading to the exhaust pipe 36. The exhaust passages 31 are surrounded with asbestos or other material which prevents undue heating of the bearing surface of the valves. To prevent the deposit of foreign matter adjacent the cylinder ports, packing-rings carrying a cross-bar 52, Fig. 4, are housed in suitable grooves so that the bar 52 may act as a scraper. A modification is described in which each end of the exhaust passage in a valve-section registers alternately with a port leading to the discharge pipe and with a cylinder port. Each section is split longitudinally through the supply ports and provided, if required, with a spiral packing-ring 78, Fig. 9, extending throughout its length. The valve may be stiffened by internal ribs.
